Doesn’t success feel wonderful?!! I know it does for me. Teaching is hard. Very hard. I usually have to beg and plead to get students to participate. Not this week though. I introduced “flipping the classroom” to the students. For the most part, students are on board. High five for that. Even though we didn’t completely flip the classroom yet, we have started classroom type activities that they will be expected to do. I also have been creating videos for them to watch at home (but it’s not mandatory….yet).
One activity stands out to me the most. Students completed a practice test in groups. For the most part, the conversations I heard were awesome! They truly helped one another work through the problems. It rocked. The next day student groups were randomly assigned question numbers to present and explain to the class. This also rocked!
Of course, there are always a handful of students in each class that don’t seem to want to try. I haven’t figured that out yet…when I do, I’ll be a millionaire. However, these activities reached my top students, middle students, and low students that WANT to learn. They were engaged and participating and getting more instruction than normal. It was an awesome feeling, plus I didn’t feel like a chicken running around with my head cut off! Sometimes I try to be the one who explains everything to every student. That was a mistake…why not get help from students that understand, plus it benefits them. I end up not having time to explain like I want and need to. With the activities this week, everyone got a little extra help…if they wanted it…they had to make some effort on their part to participate with the group.
Make today and every day ridiculously amazing!
